Privacy policy

PesaBell (the app, the PesaBell speakers and this website) is run by VISIONOVA TECHNOLOGY GROUP LIMITED, a company registered in Hong Kong (“we”). This page explains what PesaBell reads, what it keeps, and where.

On your phone

  • PesaBell reads incoming SMS to find M-Pesa confirmation messages. Messages that are not about M-Pesa are not stored and not sent anywhere.
  • If you allow notification access, PesaBell also reads notifications from SMS apps and from Safaricom’s apps, to catch M-Pesa messages and to double-check them. It ignores notifications from all other apps and keeps nothing that is not an M-Pesa message.
  • Your payment records (the amount, the name and phone number shown in the M-Pesa message, the M-Pesa code, the time and the balance) are stored on your phone only. They leave the phone only when you export or share them yourself.
  • Your personal list (people whose payments are not counted as sales) is stored on your phone.

On our server

  • Your account: the shop name, the login name, the password (stored only as a scrambled hash that cannot be turned back into the password), the subscription dates, and which phones are logged in.
  • Your speakers: the serial number, whether the speaker is online, its internet address and the status it reports, such as battery and signal.
  • Payments: to make your speaker say a payment, the app sends the amount and the M-Pesa code to our server. The server passes the amount on to your speaker and does not store it. Of the M-Pesa code it keeps only a one-way fingerprint, for 30 days, so that the same payment is not announced twice. Payers’ names and phone numbers are never sent to the server. For some speakers the server makes a short sound file of the announcement; it is kept in memory for two minutes and then deleted.
  • Technical logs: what happened to the speakers (for example, when they came online) for 30 days, and the commands sent to them for 90 days. These logs contain no amounts.
  • Subscription payments: when you pay for PesaBell, we record the date, the amount and the M-Pesa receipt, for our accounts.

Our server runs on Amazon Web Services in Cape Town, South Africa.

What we don’t do

We don’t sell your data, we don’t show ads, and we don’t share your data with anyone, except when the law requires it. PesaBell never asks for your M-Pesa PIN and cannot send money.

pesabell.com uses no cookies and no tracking. Your choice of language is saved in your own browser.

How long we keep data

Account information is kept while your account is in use. If you ask us to close your account, we delete it, except the records of your subscription payments, which we keep as long as the law requires for our accounts. Phone logins that have not been used for 400 days are deleted.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account. Uninstalling the app deletes the records on your phone. Under Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019, you can also complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (odpc.go.ke).
